How do you know it did any good?

Both Leo and I started doing the Entrecard thing this month and increasing our blogging. The goal, of course, is to drive traffic to our online stores.

My question is this: how do I know it is working? Are the hours spent blogging and dropping and leaving comments worth anything? Is the bottom line increased sales?

Well, I don't know how you can tell! I think it's impossible unless you had a huge, sudden surge in sales that you could tie in to increased blog readership.

If anyone knows of a way to really tell, please let me know. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Niku - Zines and So Much More

I had never bought a "zine" before, but recently bought one from Niku on Etsy. What a wonderful surprise!

"Part art zine, part personal zine, all mailart zine, Postal Curiosities & Delights is all about the importance of mail in my life and the role it plays. Each zine is assembled by hand and is a unique creation. This zine was typed on a 1940s royal deluxe typewriter and includes collages of mail ephemera from my collection. Pages include rubber and postge stamps, stickers, vintage paper ephemera and found images.

"Each comes with a mailart kit full of vintage mail supplies, collage materials, artistamps and postage stamps, and various other goodies I've collected for you to create your own mail art!"

Niku has been selling on Etsy for over 3 years now, and does a thriving business - I hope it will continue for many more years!

Los Angeles Harbor Freeway

It has been many, many years since I drove the LA freeways. Even then, they were clogged beyond belief. That's why I like this postcard.

Look how few cars there are, and how OLD they are - 1950's cars! Plus, very little pollution hanging around.

To buy this little bit of history, click on the title above.

Thanks for looking!

Etsy August - Slow but Going!

We sell vintage items on a handmade site. Apparently thousands of other people sell vintage, too! I don't know the numbers, but there are 200,000 plus selling on Etsy now.

The first month was a partial month, but I had sales enough to cover my expenses. The second month was much better. I was really excited about the prospects.

This month, August, I have still had enough sales to cover expenses, for which I am greatful. But, it has been about 1/3 of July's business.

I cannot tell why exactly. I've got twice as much listed as I had in July, and branched out in variety. So, is it because of vacations? The fuel crisis? Bad karma?

I don't know, buy I'll just ride it out. I've dramatically increased blogging, hoping that would help. We'll see - September looms ahead!

Diefenbach - why so wonderful?

We recently received a consignment to sell a collection of Diefenbach postcards, framed silhouettes, and a wonderful book called "Per Aspera Ad Astra".

According to history, Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach was one of the founder's of the hippie movement.

In the 1860s an ex-Protestant minister named Eduard Baltzer published his four-volume book about naturliche lebensweise or "natural life style". He organized some vegetarians and founded a Free Religious Community, then later published a book on Pythagoras as the ancestor of his movement.

Baltzers writings had a strong influence upon a young painter named Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (1851-1913) who also went on to form several communities and workshops for religion, art and science. Diefenbach spent the last portion of his life on the Mediterranean isle of Capri, which was a retreat for other life-reformers. He died and is buried there on the island, and there is a museum with 300 of his works.

His silhouettes are whimsical, lyrical, beautifully formed and fantastical - all at the same time. Who'd ever dream of the wonderful, imaginative art except someone who was a little out there?

Well, you don't have to be out there to enjoy them. We are selling them at a rapid clip. Enjoy the pictures!

Eugene, the cutest little chihuahua

My friends little 1 1/2 pound chihuahua, Eugene, got heat stroke yesterday. He's only 7 weeks old. He's at the vet getting an IV. I hope he lives. Such a cute little guy! (This is not his picture, but looks a lot like him. His ears are bigger, and he wouldn't wear a sweater for anything - too macho!)

He knocked over his water cup and was without water for a long, long time. They found him nearly dead when they got home last night. If he lives, he's coming to the shop with them from now on. Poor little Eugene (pronouned yew-jean here in N. C.).

Leo usually does not like small dogs. They are nervous and bark a lot. And they can run fast and stop on a dime. But he likes Eugene. Eugene has personality and spunk.

Oh, please, please pull through, little guy! He has big ears, little buggy eyes, and the biggest heart. Oh, my, poor little puppy.

UPDATE: Eugene made it through Friday night. The vet said he is depressed, but his bloodwork is good, except for low blood sugar.

The Family Picnic 1950's Car On A Vintage Printer's Block

We've listed a bunch of new items on Etsy: vintage printer's blocks.

This one shows a family (Mom, Dad, and four kids picnicking at a park with the family car in the background. Lots and lots of detail - you can even tell what kinds of food they're eating. In order to show this more clearly, the picture has been brightened so you can see the detail. I did not try to clean the block, though, as I leave that to whomever buys it. Some people prefer items in their "natural" state.

I got all these blocks from an auction; they're supposed to be mid-20th century. This could be useful for jewelry making, collecting, stamping - endless possibilities based on your imagination.

The block is 3 1/2" tall and 3" wide. The wood is about 3/4" thick. The back is plain wood, no printing or label. Click on the title above to see the Etsy listing.

Don't Make Candy In the Summertime

We have a linen postcard "Greetings from Bantam Lake, Torrington, Conn." for sale on Etsy.

On the back is written (in part):

"...I'm discontinuing my candy for the summer..."

I wonder about this woman in the middle of World War II. Was it even possible to buy all the supplies she wanted for making her candy? Was it sensible, given war-time rationing?

Postmarked June 10, 1943, Winsted, Conn and sent to Minneapolis, Minn., with a cancelled 1-cent stamp.

Working at Myra's Antiques & Collectibles

Helping Deb and Matt get a start at their new enterprise, I "volunteered" to work at Cornerstone Annex on Saturday nights during August in exchange for rent at Cornerstone proper.

I also worked Friday this week. Now, that's another 9-plus hours I spent in Myra's (aka Cornerstone Annex) after saying I'd never work there again after we pulled out of there at the end of June. There's something to be said for "never say never", because you end up feeling slightly foolish when you do the same thing again.

The Myra's that is the post-Cuba Myra's is cleaner and fuller, as Larry had his two girls put a lot of Mrs. Powell's things in there. Cuba's off to her new ventures down towards Connelly Springs. I wish her well; I heard the shop she's in now has had three failed businesses in there in the last few years. What town has not around western NC?

Business both nights was slow, slow, slow. Friday night had its usual amount of lookers - the car show brings people downtown. But they weren't in the mood to buy. Saturday was slow, with a trickle of people coming over from Myra's Italian restaurant.

There were bright spots - Eugene, the chihuahua, visited twice. Christine and Albert were next door. I got to drink Diet Mountain Dew. Leo was, as usual, an angel in disguise - showing up just when I needed him.

Off to read the Charlotte Observer.

I've been trying to sell a lot of 3 pinback buttons:

Coolidge for President (1923) (1 inch)

Reagan Bush 84 (1 1/4")

These are a nice addition to your collection. They're in good shape, but the Coolidge shows a bit of wear - it's over 80 years old!

That Old Black Magic Cast-Iron Bean Pot

We have an Etsy item for sale that's very, very old: It is a used black cast iron covered cook pot and lid with a wire handle. "8, DO, Made in USA, 8" stamped proudly on the bottom of the pot. Inside of the lid: "10 1/4, 8".

The lid measures 10 1/4" across. The pot is 4" high. It will hold about a gallon (well, that's my guess.)

Condition is good - Mama was painting the kitchen the last time she made beans in it and there are a few white splatters on the lid. It needs to be reseasoned: I cleaned it good and rubbed in a tiny bit of pure vegetable oil, but you need to wash it down good, scrub with steel wool, and rub in some bacon fat and bake it for a couple hours at 400 degrees. There are a number of sites that'll tell you how to re-season cast iron. It was rusty when I got it, but they all get that way when they sit around.

Pipal Leaf Oil Painting of a Small Bird

We have this vintage hand-painted pipal leaf showing a small bird on a tree branch for sale on Etsy.

Most likely painted in oil. Process: Green layers are removed from the pipal leaves by a special process. The Skeletal leaves are then compressed for strength and long durability. They're then painted and sealed.

This beautiful Pipal Leaf oil painting is an excellent decorative piece! The total finished size is about 7" X about 9". The leaf is about 3 1/4" X about 4 1/2". The leaf is mounted on red felt. The felt is mounted on paper - looks to be archival.

The condition is very good. The very top of the leaf is bent down a little and you could fix it with a drop of glue, but I'll leave that to you. Note: colors on your monitor may be different than actual colors due to camera and monitor settings, as is true of any artwork.

40 Years Ago Today!

40 years ago my only niece was born in Hickory, N. C. I cannot tell how beautiful she is in mere words! Little girl in my arms, you hold a central part in my heart. Happy birthday!

Life Lessons

1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it's yours to keep for the entire period.
2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, "life."
3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The "failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately "work."
4. Lessons are repeated until they are learnt. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learnt it. When you have learnt it, you can go on to the next lesson.
5. Learning lessons does not end. There's no part of life that doesn't contain its lessons. If you're alive, that means there are still lessons to be learnt.
6. "There" is no better a place than "here." When your "there" has become a "here", you will simply obtain another "there" that will again look better than "here."
7. Other people are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.
8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.
9. The answers to life's questions lie within you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.
10. You will forget all this.

Antique German Westminster Hotel Koln Mailed France to Vermont 1905 Postmarked Postcard

The address side says "Westminster Hotel, Koln" (which is Cologne, Germany). The back is filled with writing. "Dear Lilla, I simply cannot get time to write letters ..." and then goes on to write more than I'd usually write in a letter on the back of this postcard!

Times Square Motor Hotel

Back in the 70's, I lived in New York City for 3 years. I had a little 3rd-floor walkup above a country-western bar on 48th and 8th Avenue. This was just a few blocks from Times Square. I had a friend who lived at the Times Square Hotel.

So this postcard brought back memories. The only New Year's Eve I lived in that apartment was memorable - I was too afraid to go down there, so just stayed in my apartment and listened to all the noise. It was like being there anyway!

Beautiful Hawaiian Art - Scharart on Etsy

I'll let Schar Freeman speak in her own words:

"Since a child I wished to be an artist. My painting began with mud and berry juice when living in the Redwood forests of Northern California.

"My mother encouraged my passion with lessons at 12 yrs old I studied with a wonderful artist who taught me to see and feel, moving from empty space into a vision I held inside.

"I studied with individuals and in the 90's became a "Ghost Painter" for an internationally popular artist. It is here that I developed my style and skills especially in oils and production. I have not had a dry spell since. I have produced and sold over a thousand paintings of my own in two decades. My work has traveled the world and there are many collections in the USA as well as Europe.

"I have had much of my work published 1999-2009 with WeMoon Calendars and cards receiving international appreciation.

"My heritage is American Native, my people the Wintun of northern California and I draw upon the wisdom of my elders and the ancient ones that guide me.

"I relocated to this Garden Island, Kauai a decade ago after raising two incrediable sons and three husbands. A life-long dream of mine to live here and after visiting for 30 years, I made the move.

"I have vision in only one eye and each and every day I am blessed that I can see and create a landscape, develope a dream or image of a dancer which moves me. I create from my heart and paint the impressions of the beauty which continues to surround me.

"Being a cancer survivor (22yrs), a portion of every sale is contributed to American Cancer Society~Relay For Life."

Please click the title above to see Schar's work. I bought a piece as a birthday present for my husband, and we both enjoy it every day! You'll be inspired by this lovely woman's work and feel her spirit in every piece.

Comments made in the year 1955--Only 53 years ago!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before you can't get one for $2,000.00.

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a nickle just to mail a letter?'

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.'

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon . Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'

'Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.'

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.'

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas.'

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.'

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric They are even making electric typewriters now.'

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.'

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'

'Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.'

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.'

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'

'No one can afford to be sick anymore; at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a haircut, forget it.'

First full month on Etsy

Our first full month on Etsy was a resounding success to my way of thinking. We earned more than either of us expected. One thing that really help is the lower final value fee. We keep so much more of what we take in.

Patti's been expanding her knowledge of the advertising and marketing that needs to be done. Both of us have started blogging more, joining things like Entrecard to get our blogs noticed, and generally trying to step it up a notch.

We are both happy with the community on Etsy and the warm responses (generally) in the forums and chat.

So, on to an even better August! Thanks to all who hearted us and all buyers ... and to those great sellers who helped us with questions.
